Objectives of the MCA councils

Promote engagement of, and dialogue among, individuals with lived experience and those from multidisciplinary scientific and clinical communities

Provide advisory input on the current state, emerging issues and trends, and near- and long-term areas of focus for H&S within the six MCAs

Foster integration and strengthen the collective knowledge base in research, patient engagement, knowledge exchange, education, system change, advocacy, health promotion and government relations, with the overall goal of improving health outcomes

Description

Stroke

Interruption in blood flow to the brain

Heart failure

Inability of the heart to pump blood effectively due to damage or weakness

Vascular cognitive impairment

A range of memory or thinking deficits, from mild problems (i.e. forgetfulness, problem-solving difficulties) to vascular dementia, caused by a lack of oxygen to blood vessels in the brain

Heart rhythm

Irregular heart rhythms due to disruption of the normal electrical impulses of the heart (i.e. sudden cardiac arrest, atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias)

Coronary artery and vascular disease

Narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries (i.e. heart attack, angina) and abnormalities of arteries or veins that reduce blood flow between the heart and the body, leading to heart disease

Structural heart disease

Defects or abnormalities compromising the function of heart chambers and valves
